Title:
Using Activity Analytics to Increase Student Success, Empower Faculty, and Deepen Learning

Keywords:
Analytics; Student Success; Retention; Engagement

Abstract, 10-25 words:
Analytics on student activities provide instructors and advisors with an easy way to see who needs their help and why, fostering productive conversations.

Extended Abstract, 100-1000 words:
When students in blended courses complete work online, they leave a trail of their activity in server logs and databases. This data can be mined to help faculty quickly see who is at risk of failing, who is doing great but needs to be challenged more, and which parts of the course are the most challenging for this particular cohort of students. But for this data to be of value, it has to be collected, analyzed, and presented back to faculty, advisors, and course designers in ways that are easy for them to understand and act upon. When this is done effectively, faculty and advisors are set up to do what they do best -- see who needs help and reach out to them with smart, caring, human help. And course designers with access to this data can see exactly where students are struggling the most with current objectives, assessments, or instruction and revise to increase student success as soon as the following term. These informed design changes and guided student interventions can radically increase student success, satisfaction, and learning.
