Extended Abstract

We already know how to teach students, so why do we teach faculty differently? Faculty development doesnt have to be terrible, it can be awesome.

The University of Colorado - Denver is a R1 urban research institution with an FTE of 17,000. CU Online provides the LMS and academic technology support for the entire campus as well as provides grant opportunities for online programs and degrees. For the last 17 years, CU Online has supported faculty and students in both online and face to face environments.

In Summer of 2014, CU Online piloted a new 10-week, fully online faculty training program to prepare online instructors to excel in teaching and reward them for professional development through a badging program. Called Online Skills Mastery (OSM, pronounced "Awesome"), it works in conjunction with a grant program funding development of new online courses.

Come participate in the ongoing discussion of how to maximize faculty professional development, and learn from OSM examples and feedback.

Lead Presenter

David has been working in academic technology since 2006 and has served faithfully at four different institutions of higher education. Currently at Colorado University Denver he loves to work with, write, and talk about tech. He is also a vocal proponent of change in the higher-ed sector. When not behind a keyboard he can be found behind a controller, hiking or practicing Kung fu.

Crystal is the Manager of Academic Services at CU Online. Crystal’s primary focus is to expand the training and support programs offered to faculty and students at the University of Colorado - Denver. She is currently researching online faculty development and ways to impact course quality as a doctoral student at Boise State University.
