Abstract

This study highlights the use and evaluation of five online learning and presentation tools as part of a move toward blended learning in Communication Studies.

Extended Abstract

The challenges faced in fields that have traditionally taught students face-to-face in such courses as Public Speaking, Interviewing, and Performance Studies is that faculty are reluctant to utilize technologies and software that allow for asynchronously recorded presentations or performances as part of their course design. This study highlights the three-year journey of one professor's move to blended and totally online uses of five well-known technologies for online learning. The journey begins with the use of one tool as a way to have more oral presentation opportunities in face-to-face courses in the field of Communication Studies. It moves to the application of software and technology in specific courses such as Public Speaking, Persuasion, Interviewing, and the Introduction to Performance Studies. The narrative then moves to 100% online applications of these tools in Interviewing, Contemporary Rhetoric, and Public Speaking. Finally it moves to the assessment of the journey through documentation of adoption of others in the department and across the entire campus. This information session will briefly demonstrate the tools applied, share the results of department and university-wide applications, and conclude with the author's personal evaluation of the journey.

Lead Presenter

I have been an educator for 37 years. I have taught at the secondary level and for the past 32 years have taught at he University level. I have always embraced new technology as long as it was pedagogically sound. Having grown up without computers, it was a Brave New World for me. No matter how things change, learning and meeting objectives should stay in the forefront of all technology applied to teaching. Students have changed and "Digital Immigrants" must embrace the way our society now engages with information. Distance learning is here to stay and accommodates the lifestyles of our students. We need to have courses that stimulate thought, allow for collaboration, and create activities that replicate the face-to-face experience. My areas of expertise are with GDSS, specifically Expert Choice and with online learning tools such as Blackboard Collaborate, YouSeeU, and Mindtap. I wrote, produced, and directed the documentary film, _Three Vaudeville Women: May Irwin, Marie Dressler, and Eva Tanguay_ and articles on vaudeville, Group Decision Supports Systems, and group collaboration.
