Abstract

This conference presentation will offer best practices and solutions for student presentations which need to be completed in an online delivery format.

Extended Abstract

Online learning or blended learning models have continued to gain popularity especially at the graduate level in higher education. According to the 2013 Survey of Online Learning conducted by the Babson Survey Research Group, the number of higher education students taking at least one online course has now surpassed 7.1 million. As more faculty are transitioning their face to face courses to an online format, faculty have had to rethink how to organize their final class meeting which often time focused on student oral presentations.

Our conference presentation will help faculty and instructional designers identify technology resources and assignment design considerations for supporting online student presentations. This session will also provide information on the role of student project partners to facilitate student engagement opportunities for peer review and feedback. Although technology is essential, research on student video and online presentations has identified significant relevance of including a peer evaluation component (Green 2008; Holland 2014; and Mangalaraj & Taneja 2010).

What we have found with moving student presentations to an online format is that our students not only connect with content, the instructor, and each other; but they also utilize technology to impact their learning. Although these changes were necessary to accommodate the format of our online classes, these tools and project partner requirements could be used to support traditional or flipped classroom models.

Our presentation will consist of a mix of slideshow presentation, sample video clips, large group discussion, and question and answer session. We will also make our presentation slideshow and sample resources available on the conference website.

Notes:

Moving Student Presentations Online will

1. Identify and describe the challenges involved with student presentation in an online environment.
2. Discuss the solutions and technologies that are being used to solve this problem (Ensemble dropboxes, Blackboard, project partners, detailed rubrics).
3. Showcase student presentations that utilize these solutions and technologies.
4. Reflect on the products that the students made and open up for discussion with session attendees regarding their experiences with online student presentations.
