Abstract

A PowerPoint presentation will illustrate a blended learning model as experienced by K-12 homeschooled students and a homeschooling teacher.

Extended Abstract

According to the National Household Education Survey Program (NHES), 1.77 million students were homeschooled in the U.S. in 2012, which is 3.4% of K-12 students. We are one of those families who have flipped from traditional brick-and-mortar schooling to homeschooling or unschooling as some have creatively named it. This educational alternative addresses a students individualized learning needs, which is effectively student-led and student-centered.
As a K-12 homeschool educator, an online university educator, and the Director of Operations for an educational technology consulting company, my childrens learning space, which is the unschooled home, is fully immersed in the blended learning experience. For each of my 4 children, their blended learning activities include traditional hard copy textbooks and workbooks, DVD lessons, online programs, as well as a traditional classroom setting outside of the home with non-parental teachers. This diversified K-12 academic model offers the promotion of independent learning and the opportunity to discover a students learning style as it may shift, blend, or change with each academic subject.
The goal of this presentation is to share a unique blended teaching and learning model as experienced by a homeschooling teacher and homeschooled students. I would like to share the opportunities and challenges specific to blended teaching and learning in a non-traditional homeschool learning environment. I will also explore emerging technologies for blended teaching and learning and the use of open educational resources for homeschooling teachers and students.
I will give specific examples of the online programs I have integrated into the traditional textbook curriculums such as the use of Rosetta Stone
