Abstract

This will demonstrate how in using Canvas, an open source, cloud based LMS, instructors can keep student interaction levels high outside of the blended classroom.

Extended Abstract

One of the biggest challenges in blended courses is how to keep students engaged, and feeling like they connect with their classmates and instructor outside of class. The Community of Enquiry Model, which was developed by Garrison, D. R., Anderson, T., & Archer, W. (2000) tells us that the social aspect, as well as a cognitive teaching presence it critical in teaching that takes place outside of the classroom.. A strong social presence equals a strong perceived amount of learning by students, compared to a lower social presence. Swan, K. & Shih, L-F. (2005).

How do we create this "face to face" feeling once our students are outside of the class, and in their blended environment? Using Canvas, an open source, cloud based, LMS, with robust built in multi media tools, we can increase the social presence, lower anxiety, and create that in person experience. This will increase retention, and create a stronger bond between classmates, and instructor and students. I will demonstrate several different activities that will achieve this increase in online engagement, which is critical for a successful blended experience.
