Abstract

This presentation explores analytical tools that make intellectual activities of researchers widely accessible and transparent. It demonstrates their potential uses for development of institutional reputations.

Extended Abstract

Many aspects of research production have been made more transparent in the advent of Google Scholar, ResearchGate, Academia.edu, and related emerging platforms. These free or low-cost technological applications expose detailed aspects of the development and dissemination of academic publications and institutional research. Constructing portraits of the research activities of academic professionals along with those of their students can be a powerful aspect of initiatives to strengthen institutional reputation and enhance research production efforts. This presentation explores the unfortunate "gaming" of some of these platforms to produce more favorable appearances as well as the positive and less problematic applications of these systems. Blended learning classrooms can also take advantage of the portraits of academic scholarship production that the transparency of these systems provides. Through citation and network analysis, the new "public intellectuals" are becoming revealed through Google Scholar, ResearchGate, and Academia.edu as well as through social media. Often, these individuals are being spotted in lesser-known colleges and universities as well as in institutions that are generally labeled as "research leaders."
