Abstract

Showcase the curriculum, technology, results, and logistics used in our blended project based International Business study-abroad course.

Extended Abstract

Much has been written regarding the value of global education. Educators like using the phrase twenty-first century skills for a society that is shaped by globalization and technology. According to the Partnership for 21st Century Skills, these modern skills include global awareness, technological literacy, business and entrepreneurship literacy, world languages, economics, and collaboration (Partnership for 21st Century Skills, 2007) etc.

Our presentation will discuss how cultural immersion and project based blended learning can be combined, creating additional learning value. We will showcase the curriculum, technology, and logistics used in our International Business class taught in Costa Rica during January 2015. We will share and analyze our goals (both in and out of the classroom), and discuss strategy and results.

Participants will learn the practical application of blended project based learning, which increases faculty efficiency and student achievement when traveling outside of the classroom and country. We will also discuss the profound benefits of cross-cultural programs for students, higher education institutions, local communities, and the countries visited.

Ultimately, our presentation will illustrate how: 1) the right mix of cultural immersion, blended learning, and global education imparts 21st century skills to students far more effectively than a traditional classroom experience, and 2) technology and classroom management tools make learning outside of the classroom logistically easy.

Lead Presenter

Laura Anderson is an instructor at Salisbury University's Perdue School of Business where she has been teaching since 2005. Her classes on business information systems, database design, and project management have a focus on project-based immersion learning and gamification.
She is passionate about entrepreneurship and innovative problem solving which lead to creating Global Entrepreneurship and Internship classes. In addition, she is a contributor to few local business competitions.

Over her career she has presented and published in the areas of information technology, classroom technology, gamification, and innovative learning. She has done consulting work for local school and businesses in the area of data analytics and educational technology.

When Laura is not in the classroom she is spending time traveling, serving her local community, gardening, building furniture, and playing video games with her family.
