Abstract

Got Outreach? Come away with scalable, cost-free, blended content and teaching strategies for building capacity and engaging learners beyond your classroom or campus.

Extended Abstract

Pull up almost any mission statement or strategic plan and you will see it… serving the community through outreach and engaged scholarship is often expected, but no resources are dedicated specifically for this work. What if you had ways to approach this challenge head-on, opening your programing and expanding your brand not only without short-changing your student's experiences or exhausting your resources, human and otherwise, but potentially expanding the options available to you for teaching and learning?

In this session you will examine a range of scenarios, from a specialized STEM school using digital and distance learning to fully leverage the state's investment to a school or district-wide approach to effectively utilizing resources, human and digital, to develop and deliver instruction in a 1-to-1 system. This session will not just highlight instances of successful engagement beyond the classroom, but pull from theses models the best-practice strategies for creating a classroom or campus where legacy content, digital asset development and shared open resources are how you do business.

Not without its challenges, this approach to revisioning teaching and learning takes time and consistent effort to implement. Leadership from the classroom, connections to networks (both subject-specific and by modality), and an agile development approach to creation and curation of effective content are just a few of the critical factors for success that will be considered. In this session you will learn to recognize both opportunities and challenges in your current environment, then work with participants faced with similar situations to develop some initial goals and strategies, leaving with the first steps in an actionable plan for extending your reach.

Lead Presenter

Melissa Thibault is the Vice Chancellor for Distance Education and Extended Programs at the North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, leading efforts in online learning, delivery of instruction using interactive video conferencing, teacher professional development, and student enrichment programs, including the statewide Summer Ventures in Math and Science pre-college program. In her role at NCSSM, Melissa leverages the contributions of faculty and staff, develops partnerships with other education service providers, and works to realize the Schools potential in leading North Carolina in the development of STEM curriculum and instruction. In addition to leading distance education for NCSSM, Melissa is the chair the advisory board for the North Carolina Virtual Public School and has led efforts to create collaborations across K-12, community college, and university partners that would yield online content to be freely shared with any student in the state.
