Abstract

Learn how to apply a proven collaborative model to transform “good” blended courses into “quality” courses that are dynamic and cutting edge.

Extended Abstract

What characteristics make a blended course “quality”? How do we ensure best practices are integrated into blended courses? As the demand for distance education increases, we need criteria to assess quality so that higher education institutions can implement plans for improving blended courses and incorporating best practices.

At Brandman University (a member of the Chapman University System), due to the rapid production of blended and fully online courses, the Center of Instructional Innovation saw a need for creating a collaborative model to assess and improve courses using research-based practices. By creating a tool to act as a rubric (based on the criteria outlined by Quality Matters and IDEAL [Instructional Design for Engaged Adult Learners]), Instructional Designers and Faculty can take a collaborative approach to assessing courses and identifying areas of strengths and areas for improvement. This approach allows for a balanced and comprehensive assessment, while generating a repository of ideas for improvement based on blended learning best practices. With the data collected, academic schools can then create a plan for revising or updating courses.

Join Brandman University Instructional Designers, Sasha Crowley and Lisa Steiner, as they share this proven model for assessing courses to provide quality assurance of blended and fully online courses. Participants will see how Brandman implemented a tool for assessing courses, see examples, and learn tips for creating meaningful partnerships between Instructional Designers and Faculty.

Lead Presenter

Sasha Crowley in an Instructional Designer at Brandman University in Irvine, CA. As the lead Instructional Designer for the School of Arts and Sciences, Sasha coordinates course development and collaborates with faculty to improve course design and assure quality. Before making the transition to higher education, Sasha spent nine years as a high school English teacher in Irvine, CA. Sasha holds a master’s degree in Teaching from University of California, Irvine and a bachelor’s degree in English from Azusa Pacific University.

 

 

 

 

Lisa Steiner is an Instructional Designer for the School of Business and Professional Studies at Brandman University. In addition to working with faculty on course design and implementation, Lisa also facilitates instructor and student training on learning and technology best practices. Lisa holds an MA in Adult Education and Training and a BA in Journalism. Prior to Brandman University, Lisa spent 15 years as an Instructional Designer for Fortune 500 companies in the payroll, software, and utility industries.
