Abstract

A blended, flexible faculty development model is presented- designed to deliver comprehensive, quality PD while meeting the needs of busy faculty across multiple campuses.

Extended Abstract

At the end of this presentation, participants will be able to:
Compare and contrast the strengths and weaknesses of an eLearning professional development model
Discuss the application of the model in various professional development contexts
Evaluate the usefulness of the components of the model presented for implementation in their own institutional setting
How do you get busy faculty with research commitments, teaching assignments and committee meetings to find time for professional development? Flex it!

The Center for eLearning at Florida Atlantic University has developed a One-Size-Fits-All eLearning professional development plan offered to faculty as a hybrid or fully online 8 week workshop. The eCertification program is based on a series of units covering key categories in eLearning course design, development, and facilitation. Each unit has a practical application assessment and a required reflection blog designed to build a community dialogue amongst faculty participants.

A badging system allows faculty to complete the units in the time frame that works for them. This instructional designer supported workshop can be taken cohort-based or self-paced. This presentation will include:
An overview of the blended design of the workshop
Steps for implementation of the eCertification workshop
A discussion of lessons learned illustrating how reflection and evaluation has helped streamline the workshop content and improve faculty participation

Following the presentation, a community of practice style discussion will create an opportunity for collective innovation and knowledge sharing for participants.

Lead Presenter

Julie Golden joined the Center for eLearning at Florida Atlantic University (FAU) in 2012 as Instructional Designer and now serves as Assistant Director of eLearning at FAU. Before coming on board at FAU, Julie served as an instructional designer at the Institute for Excellence in Early Care and Education at Palm Beach State College where she was part of a design team working on an Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) grant to create a state-wide professional development pathway for early childhood educators.

Julie holds a Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies from the University of Central Florida and a Master of Arts in Career and Technical Education from the University of Central Florida (UCF). She is currently in the dissertation stage for her Doctorate in Organizational Leadership at Northeastern University in Boston. She also works as an online adjunct instructor at the University of Central Florida teaching courses in Instructional Systems Design, Teaching Adult Learners, General Methods of Instruction and Evaluation, Evaluation of CTE Instruction, and the Professional Role of Teachers. Prior to her career in education, Julie worked in the radio and television broadcasting industry and brings her knowledge and experience with digital media to her work in creating online learning materials and supporting distance learning faculty at FAU.

Co-Presenter Allyson Hall
Allyson L. Hall joined the FAU Instructional Design team in October 2014 as an Instructional Designer, Educational/Training Programs Coordinator. Allyson holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Telecommunication from the University of Florida and a Master of Arts degree in Sociology from Florida Atlantic University. She is currently pursuing her doctorate degree in Curriculum and Instruction at Florida Atlantic University.

Allyson is an educationist at heart. Immediately after graduating with her Masters degree, Allyson served as the Online Coordinator for Everest University and as an Adjunct instructor of Sociology at Everest University and City College. Allyson enjoys assisting FAU faculty with developing their online courses because she believes that the collaboration process helps to enhance the experience of each student.
