Abstract

Printed books represent a very old and very passive way to present material to a student. How can the Internet and other technology such as mobile devices make the science learning experience more active?

Extended Abstract

Most of the early pedagogical uses of the Internet, tablets, cell phones and related technology were passive. Faculty put out PDF versions of their syllabus, readings, sample tests, assignments and maybe links to other web pages. Students could read these (or not!) on their computer, and then on their tablet or phone. But today’s technology provides the opportunity for a much greater two-way interaction/collaboration; student to student, faculty to faculty and between faculty and students. In this talk we will discuss examples of what we mean by interactive science teaching resources. Illustrations include interactive online textbooks, online laboratories, and laboratory experiences using mobile devices.

Kyle Forinash (Indiana University Southeast, USA)

Since the early 1990s I have worked with my colleagues Ray Wisman and Bill Rumsey (now emeritus) on the use of computers and web based material in teaching. The three of us set up the very first web servers for the IUS campus in 1994, establishing IUS as the first IU regional campus having a web presence. Ray and I have also spent significant time and effort finding easy and inexpensive ways to interface physics experiments and equipment to computers and cell phones. To date we have published 16 peer reviewed articles<http://homepages.ius.edu/kforinas/FPubs.html> together on using technology for teaching, not to mention dozens of presentations and various apps for iPhone and Android OS.

To date, using open source tools, Kyle has written two online book length tutorials: Sound: An Interactive eBook and Waves: An Interactive Tutorial, which received the MPLT Excellence award in 2013 and, more recently, the “Award for Exemplary Online Learning Resources – MERLOT Classics 2014”.

Ray Wiseman

Ray Wisman (Indiana University Southeast, USA)

Ray has enjoyed nearly 40 years in computer science education and software development, much of that time exploring with Kyle ways to use computers in science education. Since 2007, he has developed Nokia, Apple and Android smartphone data collection and analysis apps for science education and taught mobile computing courses at his university.
