Abstract

To improve the Face-to-Face (group problem solving) portion of the class, mindfulness is used for focus and top hat is used for summarizing concepts.

Extended Abstract

Past implementations of blended learning in my classes has left me struggling with getting the students and groups to focus on the problem solving when we are experiencing the face-to-face portion of the class. I see two main issues I would like to address.

1. This time is very precious and often there is too much time wasted "getting into" the problems and "getting out of" the students other parts of their lives (what they did last night, how they haven't written that paper due tomorrow, etc.) In the spring quarter, I will use a mindfulness practice to focus the students at the beginning (and possibly middle) of the activity. We will work on pausing to be fully present in the moment before beginning the (next) task.

2. With the variety of progress within the groups in any given class, I often have to forgo much "end of class" discussion of the group activity. My hope is that by helping the students (groups) focus, that the groups will be able to use their time more effectively. I will also use the Top Hat student response system to help "get progress reports" of their work as the groups move through and then also summarize and focus the conclusion of the activity in order to formalize the "wrap up" for the class.
