Abstract

A hybrid delivery of freshmen orientation does work when on-line content, in-class discussions and use of campuses resources are properly combined.

Extended Abstract

In 2011, the First-Year Seminar curriculum at Penn State Shenango was completely overhauled to make it more useful and relevant for the student body. The majority of the Shenango students are non-traditional, and most students regardless of age lack fundamental skills for note-taking, test-taking, time management, and using technology beyond texting and Facebook. The new course is hybrid but hands-on and interactive. The course introduces students to technological tools including email, ANGEL (Course Management System), and eLion(web based enrollment information services); teaches the academic skills students need; and makes them utilize campus resources such as Career Services, the Learning Center, the library, and their advisers. Content is covered in on-line applications and recorded videos students watch before class, so class is discussion-based, allowing students to build relationships with their instructors. A reflective essay is also assigned that forces students to think about their educational goals and how they are going about attaining those goals, and this assignment requires all students to utilize the Learning Center . The course dovetails with our FTCAP and Orientation programs to help our students become LionStrong - able to find and use tools and resources wisely so they can be successful in their academic careers and beyond.

The presentation will include testimonials from students about the positive effect the curriculum has had on them. The presentation includes statistical analysis of how the new curriculum has affected metrics such as retention, student grades, and graduation rates, and the results of student surveys about their mastery of the course content and goals.
