Abstract

Learn how to blend events with classroom and other learning activities to create a more effective learning experience and design.

Extended Abstract

What will you take away from this blended learning conference? Will it be a 'one-and-done' learning experience, or will you leverage this event so that it supports your learning long after it's over? What will you do to make that happen? And what can you do to make the same thing happen in your blended learning course or program?

This presentation will show you how to use events to make learning linger longer -- leverage the event to extend the learning experience will beyond the spatial and temporal boundaries of the event itself.

Blended learning is often defined in terms of delivery mode (e.g., online vs. classroom), but defining it in terms of learning experience offers new possibilities.
Events have distinctly useful characteristics as learning experiences: they enable real-world, hands-on experience; they provide a focal point for topics of special emphasis; they can support a variety of ancillary activities that can enhance the learning experience.

Events can also be used to "anchor" a learning experience in ways that extend the learning well beyond the event itself, connecting it with other learning resources and infusing it into the classroom to change pedagogy (e.g., incorporating more hands-on experience into the classroom, blending theory and practice, supporting competency-based learning and teaching, enabling more authentic assessment), thus creating synergies among learning activities.

The presentation will focus on three or four specific case study examples: a small-scale MOOC (aka schMOOC) offered twice over the past year (https://sites.google.com/a/tltgroup.org/7fs2/); one or two cybersecurity student competitions (the National Cyber League (NCL; http://www.nationalcyberleague.org) and the Mid-Atlantic Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (MACCDC; http://www.maccdc.org); and this conference itself.

The presentation will also share a list of actionable, effective strategies for leveraging events by connecting them with other learning activities, making events more like learning activities and vice versa, and adding other activities to enhance the learning and teaching experience. This event will also generate an expanded list through audience member contributions; participants will be highly encouraged to share their experiences, in particular their strategies for extending what they learn at conferences beyond the event itself; their strategies for using events to connect with other learning activities.
