Abstract

This plenary critically reflects on the fickle dance between teaching and technology in promoting better educational outcomes. It challenges educators to go beyond shadow dancing, the relative safety of line dancing and the popular appeal of flash mobs. The inconvenient truth is that we still need to design and choreograph more creative, flexible and personalized forms of blended teaching and learning for today’s increasingly diverse and geographically dispersed learners. There is no one dance! The key to student success is selecting the most appropriate dance rhythm for particular learners and teaching the right moves and techniques at the right times. This point is illustrated through a comprehensive conceptual framework for student success across the study lifecycle, which aims to better exploit the affordances between 21st century pedagogies and new digital technologies. Finally, a transformative agenda of blended education for change in new times is outlined as we endeavor to teach people to successfully dance towards the future so they can tackle many of the big issues facing the world.
