Creating Sentinel City™: An Immersive, Adaptive, And Educational 3D Virtual World

This showcase will demonstrate the products and processes used to develop and implement 3D virtual simulation into an online learning environment.

Extended Abstract

Sentinel City is a 3D virtual world developed by the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) at American Sentinel University. The university refers to Sentinel City as a simulated virtual city containing several scenes with educational activities that can be applied to a variety of disciplines across the curriculum.

This showcase will exhibit completed activities, explain future ventures, and discuss the methodology behind managing these types of projects. Participants will explore the design elements of the city and obtain an understanding of the diverse technology used to develop this innovative learning experience.

Lead Presenter

Trevor D. Rasmusson, MSM is the Instructional Design Project Manager for American Sentinel University. He manages the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning (CITL) under the tutelage of Dr. John Bourne. His areas of research include 3D virtual worlds, artificial intelligence and the integration of innovative technologies to enhance experiential collaboration across the curriculum. His current focus at American Sentinel includes research, development and oversight of all “next generation” initiatives with a special focus on innovative pedagogy. Trevor has an extensive background in higher education, which includes the development of experiential curriculum models to enhance student experience and learning. As an Assistant Professor at Colorado Technical University, he has taught Management Fundamentals, Project Management, Introduction to Online Learning, and Academic & Career Success. Trevor holds a B.S. in Management and an M.S. in Project Management from Colorado Technical University and maintains active membership in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare, as well as the Sloan Consortium.
