Abstract

Learn how Rio Salado College and Northcentral University collaborated together to build a teacher education program with online and face-to-face components.

Extended Abstract

In 2003, after the state of Arizona allowed community colleges to provide teacher education courses, Rio Salado College looked for an online partner to provide a blended BEd to their teacher candidates. Upon successful completion of all program requirements Northcentral University awards the degree. In 2004, RSC found Northcentral University and in 2012 the Arizona Board of Education approved this very unique teacher education program. Not only is there a blending across institutions, there is a blending of online components (course work) and face to face components (field experience) in three specializations: Elementary, Secondary and Special Education.

Students start at RSC where they take specialization specific courses
online and complete their field experience and student teaching through the
RSC. The RSC program provides 64 credits in a General Education Core -
Community College/Rio Salado Academic Foundation, and 24 additional credit
hours in content for their specialization with Level I Foundations, Level II
Methods and Level III student teaching. RSC has a field experience office to
facilitate student's field experience and student teaching.
After completion of the RSC program, the students are transferred to
Northcentral University. NCU provides ten online courses focusing on teacher
leadership skills. Two of the courses have Field Experience (Instructional
Paradigms and Technology and Assessment of Student Learning) and provide
hands-on experience.

RSC provides the field experience placement for NCU students using the database
established for their students before they transfer to NCU. This blended service
results in a quicker assignment of field experiences and allows both institutionsto collect reliable data across all field experiences in the program.

Since PK-12 teachers are required to have field experiences and student teaching
as part of their certification for the State of Arizona, this blending of face to face field experience and online courses provides an alternative for students who want to teach but cannot attend school fulltime. It also is a lower cost alternative since community college tuition is a lower cost.

This innovative blended environment has taken a great deal of cooperation,
collaboration, and communication to go from an idea to state approval. We would
like to share our success and provide other institutions with a virtual road map.
