Abstract

Let me share my experiences with how an open course became the foundation for turning blue collar, energy classroom instructors into hybrid experts (sort of!)

Extended Abstract

Can you say solar photovoltaic? Don't worry; it took me four days before the words would roll off my tongue! How did an instructional designer with a business/computing /education background end up working closely with instructors for solar, instrumentation, process technology, & AC/DC related courses? It all started with something called a TAA Grant and the need to redesign traditionally face-to-face, hands-on energy courses into hybrid format in order to meet the deliverables for the grant.

During this session, you will hear about how University of Central Florida's Blendkit course became the foundation for turning blue collar, classroom instructors into hybrid instructors and how we learned that meeting our students needs is paramount in any course redesign program.

• an overview of how they might use open educational resources such as UCF's Blendkit to jump start faculty preparation for developing and implementing their hybrid course.
• access to materials used to help instructors plan, implement, and review their hybrid courses.
• answers to questions you have about the successes and the challenges you might encounter during hybrid course development.

Lead Presenter

Loretta's work at Colorado Mountain College includes the redesign of the courses in the Integrated Technology Education program to hybrid format; assisting the Office of Online Learning with the implementation of Quality Matters, and creating faculty training for the Office of Innovations in Teaching & Learning.

Even though Loretta has lived in Colorado since 2011, she still enjoys teaching her online classes for the Computer Information Systems department at Buffalo State College where she has also worked as an interim instructor and adjunct instructor since 2003.

Formerly the Learning Technologies Integration Specialist and campus Instructional Designer at Niagara County Community College, Loretta worked with faculty, staff and students in online, hybrid and web-enhanced learning environments for eLearning. She maintains ties with NCCC as an online and hybrid course peer reviewer and occasional online instructor. She has taught as an adjunct for NCCC since 2000, teaching courses for the Computer Information Systems, Digital Media and Education departments.
Loretta's most recent achievement after becoming a member of the editorial board for teacher education, was recognition as a Peer Reviewer Extraordinaire for MERLOT again in April 2014.
